Kenwyn Harvest Festival.—A New Vestry.—The harvest festival at Kenwyn, which was held on Tuesday, was also marked by the opening of a new vestry. Ever since the restoration of the church, part of the north transept, or Tregavethan aisle, has been used as a vestry, but it was small and unsuitable for the purpose, and now a commodious and excellent building for that purpose has been erected on the north side of the tower. The circumstances under which this new vestry has been added to the church are recorded upon a tablet on the wall as follows:–
To the glory of God and for the use of this Church, this Vestry was erected by a Donation from the fund presented to the Ven. J. R. Cornish, M.A., vicar of Kenwyn and Archdeacon of Cornwall, for his long and faithful services to the Church in Cornwall, and by the freewill offerings of the parishioners.
John Tregoning, Henry Thomas, Churchwardens.
The new vestry has been built by Mr. James Julian, from designs by Mr. Swift, at a cost of about £120. Unfortunately, Tuesday was a very wet day for the opening ceremony and the harvest festival; the tea had to be in the school instead of the Vicarage-grounds, and the attendance, both there and at the service in the evening, was not so large as it otherwise would have been. Before the commencement of the service the Bishop said a service of dedication just outside the new vestry door at the west end of the nave. His lordship was accompanied by the Archdeacon, the Revs. Canon Moore, R. E. S. Buck, T. F. Maddrell, A. M. Cazalet, H. F. Wilkinson, and Davey, and Mr. E. W. Carus-Wilson (reader). The choir was augmented for the occasion by members of the Highertown and Shortlanesend chapel choirs, and under the able direction of Mr. N. B. Bullen, as choirmaster, and Mr. Arthur Gill, organist, rendered the music solidly and well, including Callcott’s anthem “Thou visitest the earth,” and Trembath’s harvest hymn. Mr. Maddrell sang the service; Mr. Wilkinson reading the first lesson, and Canon Moore the second lesson. The Bishop preached a harvest festival sermon from 1 Cor., v.8—“Let us keep the feast.” The Church was beautifully decorated—the pulpit by Miss Leverton; reading desk, Miss Paull; altar, Mrs. Gill; side window altar, Miss Gill; Bishop’s seat, Miss N. Tregoning; font, Miss Ida Foster; screen, Miss F. Carlyon; windows, Miss Toms, Mrs. Henderson, Miss Henderson, Mrs. Cornish, and Miss Coode. During the afternoon and evening merry peals were rung upon the bells by the ringers under Mr. Brewer (captain).
